Setting Up a Study Space
As we all transition to remote learning for the next couple of weeks, one of the most important things to do is to set up a study area at home. This should be somewhere with minimal distractions so that students can focus on their school work. This can be very difficult to do – especially in households with multiple students or with parents working from home while students do their school work. The sounds of others in the house doing their work can be a distraction. A simple solution to this is to put on some background music to help you focus and to cover distracting sounds. This works very well, as long as the music does not become a distraction. Instrumental music (without words) is best, as the lyrics of a song can distract us from what we should be reading or thinking about. The style of the music should be something that is calming, and this can be different from one person to the next. Following are some links to this type of music on YouTube. Each provides multiple hours of music that can play in a background tab of your web browser while working on other tasks. Families with multiple workers in the same household can use headphones so that each family member can choose a style that helps them focus without causing a distraction to others.
